Celebrate St. David's Day - 3rd March

On the 3rd March come and celebrate St David's Day (a couple of days after) with a free ride on the Bala Lake Railway to all residents of North Wales – just bring proof of address. Easter Egg Hunt - 30th March to 2nd April

Easter Egg Hunt

Your challenge is to find all the Easter Eggs the White Rabbit has hidden around the railway.

Come and join in the fun at the Bala Lake Railway this Easter.  Can you find all the Easter eggs that are hidden along the line and at the station and solve the puzzle?

There’s a yummy chocolatey prize for every child, and you might even get to meet the White Rabbit.

The Easter Egg Hunt is included free with your normal train ticket.

Race the Train - 7th April

"Race the train" with a twist!

Paddleboarders race the train along the length of the lake.

Special Train leaves Llanuwchllyn at 17:30

Come and follow the race on the train between our Steam Train and Stand-Up Paddleboarders on the lake.

The race is over 4 miles along Llyn Tegid / Bala Lake finishing at the Bala end.

Paddleboarders will set off at 3-minute intervals, Novices, Ladies and Mens, with the train setting off with the Men and giving added impetus to win the race.

You can follow the race from the train which departs Llanuwchllyn at 5:30 prompt.

We are offering reduced rate tickets (Adult £4 each way, Children £2 each way) and the train will bring you back to Llanuwchllyn.

Great Little Trains Model Railway Show - 26th, 27th and 28th May

Location: Ysgol Y Berwyn Secondary School, On the A4212, Bala, Ceredigion LL23 7RU

Welcome to the third Great Little trains Model Railway exhibition in the town of Bala in a new and re-furbished school. Located in three halls with easy access, free parking, full refreshments and a free vintage bus service linking the exhibition with the Bala Lake Railway. Additionally there is a vintage transport show taking place at the railway on Sunday and Monday.

Park at Bala or Llanuwchllyn, ride the railway, with a vintage shuttle bus service serving the exhibition. Visit the Festival of Transport (vintage vehicles, tractors, etc) at the other (Llanuwchllyn) end of our line for two great family shows over the weekend. Of course the best way to get from one to the other is by our train. The railway will be operating our intensive Pink Timetable, using vintage Hunslet steam engines from the north Wales slate quarries.

The exhibition will feature 20 (approx) narrow gauge layouts plus 10 (approx) 00/HO/7 mm layouts, in various scales, scenic, of historical and modern image, steam diesel and electric.

All the funds raised will go towards the new extension of the railway into Bala town.

We will also be offering to either  'BUY A SLEEPER' or 'BUY A SPIKE' for the railway extension.

Bala Lake Festival of Transport - 27th and 28th May

Location: Adjacent to Llanuwchllyn station

The Festival will feature a selection of vintage and classic tractors, motorbikes, cars, rally cars, stationary engines, classic Landrovers, fairground, military and large scale models.

Trade stands and refreshments available.

Car parking for the Festival of Transport will be in Llanuwchllyn Village with a free shuttle bus to the show.

Please note parking at the station will be for railway passengers only.

Evening Excursion - Jackets (no ties) - 31st May

Jacket potatoes cooked in our very special way inside the smokebox of the engine as it chuffs along the lake. We'll stop on the way back to enjoy the food, including dessert.

Steam Gala - 16th, 17th and 18th June

Our annual steam gala has moved to tie in with an event on the Ffestiniog Railway.

Our theme this year will be the Penrhyn Quarry, with visiting engines, a busy timetable of passenger and demonstration freight trains, and lots more besides.

Our special event continues during the week with visiting engines taking over our regular services, as all our resident engines will be going on holiday to the Ffestiniog Railway.

A day with Alice the Little Welsh Engine - 28th July

Come along and meet “Alice the Little Welsh Engine” from Pauline Hazelwood’s beautiful childrens' books.

 Pauline the author will be at Llanuwchllyn station reading some of the stories, demonstrating how she draws the characters and involving the children in activities as well as signing books.

Alice the Little Welsh Engine Activity Book

‘Alice’ will be giving rides at Llanuwchllyn station in the special Dinorwic Quarry carriage that was once used by royal visitors and shunting slate wagons just like she did in the quarry.

‘Alice’ will also be double-heading the last train of the day, which departs Llanuwchllyn at 3:55pm.

Activities start at 10:30am and finish at 3:45pm.

Normal train fares apply for rides - with all additional activities included.

Our Blue timetable with trains departing Llanuwchllyn at 11:00am, 12:45pm, 2:20pm and 3:55pm will be in operation.

Barbeque Specials - August 2nd, 9th & 16th

A very pleasant way to spend the evening on a return journey by steam departing Llanuwchllyn at 6:15pm.

Stop for a barbeque at Llangower and watch the sun going down across the lake.

Pre-booking is required.

Join us for an evening outing by steam train along the full length of the railway, with an extended stop by the lake on the return journey to enjoy a fresh burger or a hot dog.

Mini Steam Gala - 25th, 26th and 27th August

Our home fleet of engines will be taking part in a mini steam gala with an intensive timetable and a chance to have a go yourself with our 'Driver for a Fiver'.

Halloween Trains - October 27th & 31st

Be Prepared to be Scared!!!

We are running these very popular trains again this Halloween.

Dare you ride the ghostly train to the witches coven?

Will your train make it through to the end of the line or will one of the ghosts or spectres force it to turn back?

There's only one way to find out, join us for an evening of storytelling and ghoulish fun.

This event is only mildly scary and is suitable for the whole family.

Our Halloween Trains will depart from Llanuwchllyn at 5.15 and 6.30, please note that it is not possible to board these trains at any other station.

Santa's Annual Visit - December 8th & 9th

The Bala Lake Railway is pleased to announce that Santa Claus has accepted our invitation to visit Llanuwchllyn on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th December 2018.

Trains will be hauled by two of our steam locomotives, suitably decorated. All trains will depart from Llanuwchllyn Station on a journey down the line to Santa’s grotto where the children will meet Santa and receive a gift.
