Passenger Carriages

Bala Lake Railway has a number of carriages to make your journey comfortable. All were built specially for the railway and some include wheelchair facilities. Additionally, bicycles and child buggies can be often be carried, please check with the train guard at time of departure.

Numbers 1 & 2

Built by Severn-Lamb of Stratford-upon-Avon in 1972 as open-sided toast-racks and each had seating for 36.

Both have been rebuilt in the railway's workshop, had the roof raised and wood panelling added, including side panels and half doors, making them ideal vehicles for warm weather or in which to enjoy the fresh air of Wales.

Can carry bikes & buggies, unsuitable for wheelchairs.

Numbers 4 & 5

Built by MFD Engineering of Wrexham in 1974 and 1976.

Each catered for 36 passengers, in divided compartments and had a small guard's van.

No. 5 was refurbished in the railway's workshops during winter of 1993-4, provided with wider doorways and accommodation for wheelchair passengers. No.4 awaits the same treatment.

Numbers 6, 7 & 8

Built by Gwynedd Engineering in Bala and delivered in 1979.

No. 6 & 7 were built as a fully enclosed carriages with 30 seats. No. 8, built by the same company in 1981, has 24 seats and a guard's van.

Recent improvement works have included replacement roofs and adding large, sliding panel windows providing better passenger visibility. Number 8 has removable seats to accommodate wheelchair passengers or bikes/buggies.

Numbers 9 & 10

Built by Gwynedd Engineering in Bala and delivered in 1982.

Each was built as a semi-open, with half-sides and slatted seats, each carries 45 passengers. Can carry bikes or buggies, no wheelchair spaces.

No. 10 has had its body refurbished and No. 9 awaits the same treatment. Both have received new roofs.

Supported by Volunteers


The railway is supported by Bala Lake Railway Society (Cymdeithas Rheilffordd Llyn Tegid), whose members provide train crews & carry out repairs & maintenance to the line's infrastructure.

You do not need to be a member to volunteer on the railway but new members are always welcome.

Accumulated society funds are used to benefit the railway. One recent example was the partial cost of the rebuilding of Glanllyn/Flag Station.
